A Godly Wife & A Happy Life.

I want to be a Godly Wife, so I was very excited to record this week’s Podcast.

The Thriving Podcast is currently doing a series called, “Marriage: Covenant vs. Contract.” The first week, Carrie and I dived into what the difference was between a legal contract and a Biblical covenant. BUT this week, we went further into what it means from a wife’s perspective and how to be a Godly wife.

Prior to recording, I would have confidently labeled myself a Godly wife. I get us all to church, play praise music when I’m cooking, and pray every morning and night with my family. I respect my husband, seek his leadership, and support him any way I can. I’ve read Proverbs 31, Colossians, and Titus, and I am doing my best to check all of those boxes. So surely, I am a Godly wife… except, I was missing a major piece of it all.

On the ‘Godly Wife’ episode, we had a special guest, Christine Smiley. Christine and her husband, Kevin, lead a marriage group at our church every spring. The Group is called ‘Marriage on the Rock,’ and it is all about building your marriage on a strong foundation with God and how we can do that regardless of where we are in our marriage. The Smiths and us have both completed the course and have truly gained so much from it, so when we were planning this series we knew Christine was the perfect guest! Christine is just a beautiful example of a Godly wife and mother, and she is such a great Bible teacher we knew we would learn more as well.

Christine broke down three big lessons for being a Godly wife … And I got a BIG Lesson on Prayer.

We are called to pray with, for and over our husbands.

& I was missing the over step.

I pray with my husband and two sons every morning and night. I pray for my husband every day when I pray at my prayer board. But I rarely pray over him.

… So what’s the difference?

Praying with your husband is an intimate moment to pause the world and seek God together. It’s a safe way to invite your spouse in to listen to the concerns and worries on your heart that you are turning over to God. It’s a way to celebrate and give thanks together, and it’s a way to come together in the chaos of life through good and bad times.

Praying for your husband is a thoughtful moment to pause and lift up his prayers. It’s a moment to go to God on his behalf for the desires or worries of his heart. It’s time where you pray for answers that impact him or impact your lives together.

Praying over your husband is a selfless moment of surrender. When you pray over your husband, your praying for the Holy Spirit to intervene; your trusting God’s guidance over your own. This is is when wives are going to spiritual war for their husbands. We are praying for the qualities of Christ to show up in them, for God’s strength to consume them, and for the Holy Spirit to lead their steps.

Being a Godly wife is more than understanding what scripture calls of you and your role, it’s being willing to fight for your husband in this world and the spiritual world. It’s bold, it’s passionate, it’s surrendered, and it’s hard.

The famous scripture in Ephesians 5 calls us to be submissive to one another out of mutual respect for God’s plan. As Christians, it’s important we submit to each other and surrender to God’s plan. BUT we can’t let that submit and surrender allow us to overlook the battlefield in front of us.

The enemy doesn’t like covenants with God because he understands their power, and when you are a married Christian couple you have entered this covenant. Which basically means we can expect this to be one of the main places the enemy will try to attack. That’s why as Godly Wives we have to use prayer as a weapon in this spiritual battle.

We have to Pray OVER our husbands.

After this podcast series and doing some more deep dives in scripture myself, I am praying three big prayers over my husband and I encourage you to do the same.

  1. I pray for the holy spirit to help guide his leadership in our home.

  2. I pray his actions modeled to represent the hands and feet of Christ.

  3. I pray for his strength to come from God and provide for our family and home.

I picked these prayers to directly pray over my husband in different ways and through each day to help him grow closer to God by praying for growth in areas that can only grow through the trinity. In addition we have started to pray the armor of God over our family too. Spiritual warfare is real, the enemy is watching, and the world is tempting. I want to pray over my husband even when he’s too busy to pray over himself. I want our Heavenly Father to support this early father. I want to honor him because I am a woman of honor.

Now, I boldly pray over my husband. I go to battle with the Word instead of my worry.

My praying over him will keep the enemy from preying on him.

God’s Love & Mine,

Christina
